I have been to Quito. Was told stories of a robbery the first day I got to my hostel. So I was extra careful there.

I can’t believe you lost her phone twice. Love the story of trying to dash after the thief and track down the correct police officers. And I can just see the two of you on the backs of those motorcycles.

Great solution, by the way. They’ll have to take me with it!! 😁

Hey Holly!

I can't believe I lost my phone twice either! Especially when I was so much more aware the second time.

You did well not to lose anything in Quito. The stories are unfortunately all too true.

The motorcycle thing was kind of wild. I was so glad that I had had experience riding on a motorcycle before and didn't look like a completely hapless tourist.

I have an even better tether now. Hopefully that is enough of a deterrent when we are in high-crime places again.

I've never been to Quito. But I did get robbed in the US, in New Jersey, when I was still just a visitor. Not only my camera (I had no portable phone then), but all my money, documents, and passport were stolen. When we went to the police, they flat-out told me they had no time to try to catch petty thieves. These things happen, no matter where you go. I love your solution with the shoestring, though.

Thanks for your comment, Emese-Réka. I'm sorry that happened to you. I think it is especially stressful and problematic to be robbed in a place where you don't live. And, yes, the police can be useless for these type of crimes. I've actually been robbed several times when I lived in houses. Mostly because I didn't have my house or storage shed adequately secured. Once the catalytic converter was sawed off from under my truck in front of my house. I called the police to make a report- not because I thought they'd catch the robber but to document it. The cop acted like I was wasting his time.

The police in Quito were very nice. I knew that they wouldn't catch the robber, but there is a record now and it is part of the crime statistics in Quito.

Yes, I think we report it so there is a record of it, but police really make you feel like we are wasting their time. It happens, it comes with the territory. It still shouldn't stop us from traveling. In that way, you definitely didn't fail as a traveler :)

As I follow you two, I find myself drawn into your adventures. However you wrote this one out like it was a crime novel! It was!

Sorry @ the turn of luck, but wishing you continued good fortune on the road to even more travels. 🤓

Thanks, Kathleen. I was trying to make it a bit suspenseful!

Yes, hopefully all our luck will be good in the future! Thanks for following along.

Thanks. I have a substantial tether on my phone now. Having my phone stolen twice was enough.

Man, I could soooooo see myself being tempted to take photos when I know i shouldn’t be. I’ve got a phone case with a strap, but mostly so I don’t drop it into the ocean! LOL.
